For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of stumbling across Tim
Sharky, he is essentially a middle aged sex tourist from New Zealand
currently living it up in Thailand. He's also become a bit of an
internet sensation over the last few months. This success of his is
mostly due to the boyish, carefree chronicles of his sexual exploits in
south East Asia - to be found on his Facebook page.
Though
aside from gentlemanly innuendos about what he did to the Thailand's
female population and many, many photos of his huge frame looming over
petite young women; we're also treated to sage insights into day to day
life in Thailand: "Such simple little creatures" he offers in reference
to Thai women, "If you give these girls a brand new Louis Vuitton bag.. They will just go and swap it for a fresh coconut...lol...".
Now,
we've all seen a complete prick before and none of us should be too
shocked that Tim Sharky exists... but unfortunately the man has four and
a half thousand followers, God knows how many friends and a constant
stream of comments from other creepy bastards offering hearty words of
encouragement. Even though his current profile picture is him with,
sorry, looming over, a fairly worried looking 4ft tall child. I'm no
feminist by any means but i do shudder a bit when I realise that we live
in a world where a gigantic, heavily tattooed sex tourist can become a
hero of the masses.
What
really gets to me about Sharky is that he exudes an air of
self-righteous superiority over the local Thai people and sort of
champions himself as a man of the people. Though if I were to ask Sharky
or his ilk how they'd feel if Thailand and New Zealand's roles were
reversed I'd imagine they wouldn't be best pleased. If New Zealand
happened to be the place with the underdeveloped economy and Thailand's
wealthy middle-aged men were coming to its shores to use and abuse New Zealand's nubile young daughters. If, due to unavoidable economic
pressures, 18 year old Kiwi children had to fuck depraved foreign men
old enough to be their fathers - I'm sure Sharkey's attitude wouldn't be
quite so boyish and carefree.
I'm
sure the likes of Tim Sharky would turn around and inform me that
they're injecting Thailand with cash, that they provide a valuable
service, that the girl's like a big Western man... but to that I would
have to reply with the 'come on' clause - come on lads. Very few young
girls would prefer to be having sex for money with an much older
foreigner rather than having the type of life we'd wish for our own
daughters.
I'm
not saying that this is ever going to stop, or that in this today's
Thailand these girls have many other options but to keep following this
unfortunate course; but I do believe that we should avoid making a cult
figure out of a man like Sharkey... he is a dark creature.
